Fiat 500 earns IIHS Top Safety Pick

All the time we were out testing the current crop of subcompacts we hear the same thing: “Is that little car safe?” So if the car in question is the Fiat 500 the answer of this is that is it safe. This comes from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The independent venerable testing agency has issued a Top Safety Pick to the small diminutive Italian cutemobile, and joins the group with the Ford Fiesta as the only minicars to earn such praise.

We all have the same little problem with our Fiat Coupe. We love the punk rock styling but were disappointed by the feel for its front-wheel drive layout. The perfect blend would be the Fiat Coupe rock styling and the crazy power of the and technologically advanced powertrain that is the Mitsubishi 3000GT VR-4′s but that car was ugly.

“How do you get round the Top Gear” test track faster?  Switch off the air con in the reasonably priced car according to Clarkson.  Ok, this might save a percentage of power, but in the real world would this tactic have any significant effect on fuel economy – which is what most of us are interested in?

Your air conditioner becomes your best friend if you are driving in high temperatures under direct sunlight.  Ok, not a scenario we’ll face in the UK very often, but I hired a car recently on holiday in Rhodes.  My preferred vehicle was a Ford Focus, but the only one they had didn’t feature air con.  Having driven in Greece and Crete during August before, I cheerfully settled for the alternative of the Fiat Panda with air conditioning (surprisingly nice car by the way).
