All the time we were out testing the current crop of subcompacts we hear the same thing: “Is that little car safe?” So if the car in question is the Fiat 500 the answer of this is that is it safe. This comes from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The independent venerable testing agency has issued a Top Safety Pick to the small diminutive Italian cutemobile, and joins the group with the Ford Fiesta as the only minicars to earn such praise.

The only thing that concerns us is that IIHS has specifically excluded 500′s should be before August 2011. And according to the group there are some new modifications to improve safety like the driver’s seat structure, and the cars without the improved seat were judged only “marginal” in the frontal offset test.

How do you get round the Top Gear” test track faster?  Switch off the air con in the reasonably priced car according to Clarkson.  Ok, this might save a percentage of power, but in the real world would this tactic have any significant effect on fuel economy – which is what most of us are interested in?

Your air conditioner becomes your best friend if you are driving in high temperatures under direct sunlight.  Ok, not a scenario we’ll face in the UK very often, but I hired a car recently on holiday in Rhodes.  My preferred vehicle was a Ford Focus, but the only one they had didn’t feature air con.  Having driven in Greece and Crete during August before, I cheerfully settled for the alternative of the Fiat Panda with air conditioning (surprisingly nice car by the way).

Most people are still under the impression that the more you run the car’s air conditioning system the more petrol it will guzzle, but that may not be absolutely true. With the advent of modern, more fuel efficient lean burn engines, leaving your air conditioner off makes barely any difference to the amount of petrol consumed.  OK, the air con unit does draw its power from the engine which uses some fuel.  Depending on the type of unit or car, fuel economy can be reduced by up to 20% in some cases.  But, driving with the air conditioner on is probably just as fuel efficient as the popular alternative ventilation/cooling method of driving with the windows down.

Driving with the windows down creates drag, which means that the engine has to work harder to keep the car at the current speed and therefore burns just as much petrol as running the air conditioner.  Obviously, if you’re driving in city traffic you are probably not going very fast, so the drag on the car is minimal.  But at least the air con could help in filtering out the pollutants and particulates that you’d otherwise get streaming in.  Honestly, as far as I can tell there is no noticeable difference in fuel economy, especially driving at speed on motorways and the like, between the “air con on”  or “window down” approach.

Usually the designers turn to their ideas first when they start a project on a new car, this time, they started open communication with the customers. Communication continued throughout the project until the last decision. Important information was collected from the Brazilian customers who saw the car as an icon of long-lasting, reliable and economic specifications. After numerous conversations with the clients, it has come to a conclusion that the foundations of the car should start from the first model.

The result was an original concept with the name “Round Square”, a blend of geometrical shapes that combined classic and contemporary look of the Fiat Uno. This was achieved by using premises from Industrial Design instead of Automotive Design, creating curvier and sportier lines.

Geometrical shapes play a part in the interior also. Round shapes form a comfortable inner space, well-lit, with colors, contours, graphs, textures and etc. All detailed from stylish and economical point of view. One of the main features of the interior is the panel, which can create different decorative graphic elements. The instrument panel includes a display, lit by white LEDs, that makes the driving a lot easier.

The new hatchback in Fiat Uno is a well-lit cabin with compact lines giving optimum space for cozy traveling. Convenience items are installed like CD/MP3 player with Bluetooth, air-conditioning, hands-free and USB connection and safety airbags.

Economy in fuel consumption is achieved with engines developed by FPT – Powertrain Technologies, Brazil. The Fiat Uno with 1.0 liter and 1.4 liter engines possess the latest technology and components in low-cylinder capacity engines.

Ensuring the safety of its passenger, The Fiat Uno is built withstand collisions with minimum danger for the driver as possible.
