Tata Nano is already in the Tata Motors India distribution network and from April 1.2010 it can be find in the authorized outlets. Although in the limited numbers it is already a symbol for the Motorization of the every Indian family. The new factory is on the way and will be finished this year (in 2010). The annual production is estimated to 350.000 Tata Nano cars.

Tata Nano is going to be offered in three trim levels: Tata Nano Standard, Tata Nano CX and Tata Nano LX. The Standard version of the car is going to be offered in three colors, single color seats and fold down rear bench for added cargo space. Tata Nano CX will be offered in five colors, heating and air conditioning (HVAC), two color seats, parcel shelf, assisted breaks and fold down rear seat. Tata Nano LX is going to have everything from the CX version, central locking system, front electrical windows, mobile charger point, body colored exteriors in three premium colors, fog lamps, electronic trip meter, cup holder in front console, and rear spoiler.
The first two trim levels are available in BSII* and BSIII* emission norms and the LX version is BSIII* and BS-IV* ready.

Performance: The all-new 2-cylinder aluminum MPFI 624 cc petrol engine delivering 35 PS at 5250 rpm and a torque of 48 Nm at 3000 rpm. This enables Tata Nano to have a top speed of 105 km/h and negotiate inclines with a grade ability of 30%. The fuel efficiency is very high and it is 23.6 km/liter, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under mandated test conditions, which is the highest for any petrol car in India. The high fuel efficiency and low overall weight of 600 kg, ensures that the Tata Nano with 101gm/km has the lowest CO2 emission amongst cars in India.

Tata Nano safety performance is beyond current regulatory requirements – it passes the roll-over test and offset impact, which are not regulated in India. It has an all sheet-metal body, reinforced passenger compartment, crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, besides mandatory seat belts and complies fully with existing Indian safety standards. Tires are tubeless and the rear pair is wider than the front one which makes Tata Nano more stabile and safer for driving.

It is strange how the car with so small exterior can offer that much spacious passenger compartment in which four adults can comfortably seat . With a length of just 3.1 meters, width of 1.5 meters and height of 1.6 meters, Tata Nano has the smallest exterior footprint for a car in India but is 1/5 more spacious than the smallest car available today. A high seating position adds to the additional comfort. Its small size coupled with a turning radius of just 4 meters, makes it extremely maneuverable even in the smallest streets and parking slots which are in the abundance across all India.

Note: BS II, BS III and BS IV are the India mandatory norms for Nitrogen Oxides, Hydrocarbons, Carbon Monoxide and particulates. These norms are substantially aligned with the European norms Euro II, Euro III and Euro IV; the main difference is that the peak speed in the extra urban driving cycle is 90 km/h in India and 120 km/h in Europe.

Tata Nano is the cheapest car in the world and it was a Tata Motors Company biggest threat to the automotive competition in India, but also in the world. But probably cheap price tag of $2.500 comes with a price. And that price is the safety of Tata Nano.
There are at least three and probably four, reported cases for Tata Nano in flames.

In 2009 there was three reported cases of the burning Tata Nano in Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Delhi.
The newest reported case of Tata Nano in flames was reported by the software engineer Satish Sawant. He bought his car from the dealership and the first celebration ride together with his wife and small kid end up in flames.

Seconds after they live the tiny car the flames start from the rear mounted engine and within minutes the whole car was burning in flames.
Mr. Sawant was offered a replacement or refund, but now his wife changed her mind and she does not like to own a car anymore.

Dharwad (Karnataka), but also after establishing a strategic cooperation with Fiat in 2005, now Tata Motors has manufacturing plant in Ranjangaon (Maharashtra) and a modern new factory in Sanand (Gujarat). Tata Motors factory in Ranjangaon (Maharashtra) is producing both Tata cars and Fiat motors and now Tata is also a general distributer of Fiat cars in India.

Tata Motor production, support, sales, spare parts and dealership network has more than 3500 established service points.

In September 2004 Tata motors history become richer with another historical moment, becoming the first India company form the automotive sector which are listed on the NYSE (New York Stock Exchange) which was a sign that Tata Motors is a international automotive player which need to be counted for.
Today Tata Motors have a subsidiaries and stocks in companies in South Korea, Thailand, UK and Spain. In 2004 Tata Motors bought Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company (which is second largest truck manufacturer in South Korea) and British legends Land Rover and Jaguar was bought in 2008.
After some reorganisation the new Tata Daewoo Commercial Vehicles Company launched a few new products on Korean and International market. Today Tata Daewoo is largest exporter of heavy commercial vehicle in South Korea with more than 60% of the total export.

Another great year for Tata Motors Limited was 2005 when Tata bought 21 percent of the Hispano Carrocera stocks. Hispano Carrocerra is famous bus and coach automotive producer from Spain. The rest of the stocks were purchased in 2009. With Tata Motor Limited help, Hispano Carrocera presence expanded on the international market.

In 2006 in Brazil, Tata Motors Limited formed a joint venture with Marcopolo which was a serious player in the building a buses and coaches bodies. With Tata help Marcopolo is manufacturing a full buses and coaches for domestic market, India and international market. Same year a joint venture was formed with Thailand Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant Company. Very successful result of this joint venture is a new Xenon pickup truck.

In 2008 Tata Motors promoted the new Tata Nano. Tata Nano is promoted and marketed as the people’s car because the price tag is going to be $2500 – $3000 on the domestic market and the price abroad will be not more than 4000 euro.

In May 2009, Tata Motors introduced a new range of Tata Prima trucks. The Tata Prima trucks set new standards in the power, speed, operating economy and carrying capacity. According to Tata executives a new Tata Prima trucks can match the best in the world by performance and low life-cycle cost
Today Tata Motors Limited is developing a environment friendly technologies, alternative fuel vehicles, electric and hybrid vehicles, fuel cells but also is working on the upgrading of the performances of their manufacturing plants and production facilities.

Tata Motors Limited has it all to become a leading global player in the automotive industry. With a high educated working force, low wages, large domestic customer base, high performance and vibrant support industry Tata Motors are becoming an automotive power which will take away a lot of clients from the other automotive players. After the test assembly, the first serial Ford Figo is going to hit the Indian market in March. With this model Ford is planning to become one of the big players in India and not only the “exotic” brand with less than a small piece of the market.

Ford Figo is sub B category car which will be the part of the “Car for everybody” story in India. Ford Figo is attacking the compact car segment which consist 70% of all cars sold in India. By 2016 this segment will climb to 3 millions units. In this moment more than 50% of the market share belongs to Suzuki local company –Maruti-Suzuki, which is producing 7 models in this segment.

With establishing of this auto plant Ford is trying to play the game with more established auto makers like Suzuki and Hyundai. The price tag of the new Ford Figo will be 350.000 to 450.000 rupees or $7.500 to $9700.

The new Ford Figo will be produced in the brand new Maraimalai Nagar plant build in the city of Chennai. The factory is a $500 million investment and almost 90% of the plant is finished. The plant will produce 200.000 cars and 250.000 engines for the cars which is more than four times than current capacity of 60.000 1.4l diesel engines per annum.

The plant will also produce 1.2l petrol engines. 79% of the parts for the diesel engine and sixty percent of the petrol engines are produced locally in India. The producers for this engine parts are also located at Chennai or close to this automotive industrial centre which is conveniently called Detroit of India.

With the Ford Figo plant build, Chennai is becoming one of the top ten global automobile industry centres with a capacity of 1.2 million cars and 350.000 commercial vehicles per annum and the state Tamil Nadu is producing more than 32% of India capacity. This means that every 20 seconds a new passenger car rolls out of the assembly line and one commercial vehicle on every seventy five seconds.

Besides Ford, five other big players in the automotive industry already have producing plants in Chennai. After Mitsubishi, BMW, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault and recently Ford, Mahindra also decided to establish a plant in this city. But besides auto makers a heavy machinery producers like Caterpillar, Kobelco, Komatsu and Doosan are present in this large industrial city.

A large work force of 700 qualified automotive employees will work in the Figo and the engine plant. With the new Figo, Ford will hit both the domestic and the export markets. Although India is the main market; Ford will export Figo in South Africa and Asia markets.
