Kia Pop Zero Emission Concept Car

Kia Motors, who have become renowned for their innovative concept cars, have announced they will be revealing their all-new electric concept car; the Kia Pop.

Although the Korean firm are being remarkably quiet about the exact details of their new machine, which will be displayed at the Paris Motor Show on the 30th September, a few details have been released.

The offical details released by Kia are minimal to say the least, but they highlight some pertinent facts. The car produces zero emissions while in use, as it’s electric only, making it one of the most environmentally sound concept cars ever produced. It also has enough room for three people, despite being only three metres long. Whilst this may be hard to picture looking at it, the overhead shot reveals more about the incredible styling and use of space inside the car:

The styling of the cars’ exterior is also very unique, and could form the basis of one of Kia’s next City cars.

Although the car is only a concept, Kia have built an excellent reputation for putting their previous concept cars into production (see the Soul or the Venga for good examples of this), meaning we could well see this car, or at least the majority of its’ features, on a future Kia model.

Unfortunately that’s about all the information available on Kia’s latest concept model, but we’ll bring you details of the car once it has been properly revealed at the Paris Motor Show.

New Vehicles in the Mini Family

The Mini team has been working on a smaller version of the MINI for some time now. Rumor has it, that the concept should be ready for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. Not much information has been revealed yet, but it will probably be a two-seater based on a modified version of an existing front-engine/front-wheel-drive platform with a shorter wheelbase and small-capacity gasoline engine. It would make it a direct competition to Smart ForTwo. Another possibility is that the car will have three seats. It is also expected that it will be a development of an existing concept that first appeared in Geneva in 1997 – a 4-seater known as the MINI Spiritual.

The plans for new smaller MINI are part of BMW’s Project “i” – aiming to develop cars for the future. The first vehicle in the program is the MINI E – an all-electric version of Mini. The car is not yet widely offered, but the field tests are in progress. For example, Mini E is available through leasing to private users in California and the New York area as well as in the UK. The Mini E is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack weighting 572 pounds (259 kg) that is placed instead of a back seat. The car range is said to be 156 miles (251 km) on a single charge under optimal conditions, but when it comes to standard driving conditions, the MINI can offer a range of 109 miles (175 km) in the city and 96 miles (154 km) on highway. The top speed is 95 mph (153 km/h). What is interesting, when the battery levels drop to 20%, the system automatically slows power delivery and shuts down the air-conditioning etc, to help the driver get home.

The BMW engineers also tests a race car version of MINI E. Its electric motor is identical to the one used in the standard MINI E, but the body of the car is 225kg lighter, mainly thanks to carbon-fibre panels. The vehicle is in a concept stage and it is not yet sure if it will go for sale.

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show will also host two other new releases: the 2012 Coupe and Roadster models – sportier-looking, lightener, two-seat variations of the MINI. Later this year MINI will release its Countryman model – a crossover SUV that was first shown also in Geneva, in March. It is the largest car produced under this brand.

China’s BYD with electric car for the US market

One of the most successful Chinese automotive companies in China – BYD (Build Your Dreams) Auto is going to attack the US auto market with a four-door electric car, which was presented at the last Detroit auto show.

BYD e6 will roll out of the assembly plant soon and the first vehicles will be offered on the American market by the end of 2010 year.

BYD e6 is full sized electric vehicle with 4 doors. The operational costs are only 1/3 of the regular car in the same segment. Autonomy is 205 miles and the maximum speed is 88 miles per hour. In 14 seconds can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles. BYD e6 can be charged at home, but charging stations will be offered to any interested party like transportation companies, airports, restaurants etc…

The plans for the near future are selling of 800.000 vehicles in China and abroad and becoming the biggest automaker in China mainland. There are plans for establishing a R&D and assembly plant in USA. The distribution network is still not established but BYD and their US partners are working on this issue.

U.S. is the Leader of Green Truck Industry

In January 2009 President Obama declared strong support for initiatives that aim to reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases blamed for global warming. As a part of his green stimulus package, he assigned $2.4 billion for loans and grants to companies investing in the development of low-emissions and zero-emissions vehicles.

Some of the federal money went to Navistar – a company that specializes in the production of trucks, buses, and vehicle engines. At first the company received a $39.2 million grant to develop its first all-electric commercial truck called eStar. The vehicle had its official premiere on May, 13^th. It is a medium-duty vehicle with a range of 100 miles, and maximum speed of 50 mph. Its battery can be fully charged in 6 to 8 hours and, if necessary, can be exchanged in 20 minutes , which enables 24/7 operation. The truck will be now tested by FedEx in its Los Angeles fleet. The manufacturer claims that eStar can reduce greenhouse-gas emissions by up to 10 tons of carbon dioxide a year when compared to diesel trucks. In January 2010 Navistar was given a hefty sum of $37.3 million – this time for investment in a “Super Truck” featuring a 50 percent improvement in fuel efficiency. Better efficiency is expected to be achieved by improving truck and trailer aerodynamics, waste heat recovery, combustion efficiency, hybridization, and idle reduction.

Another beneficiary of President Obama’s program is Smith Electric Vehicles U.S. Corporation. The $32 million grant is to support the production of all-electric zero emissions commercial trucks. The money should incentivize Smith’s customers participating in a commercial electric vehicle test program. The customers will be offered a subsidy in exchange for data gathered on vehicles placed into service. Currently Smith manufactures one of the world’s largest battery-electric-powered trucks – Newton. The vehicle is equipped with a lithium-ion battery that gives a maximum speed of 50 mph and a range of 100 miles. Newton runs without noise or vibration and stores electric energy during stopping thanks to regenerative braking. Smith’s trucks are used by Coca-Cola, Frito-Lay, AT&T, and Staples among others. As the CEO of Smith, Bryan Hansel claims, they are perfect as urban delivery vehicles that have lots of starts and stops on their everyday route. More of these interesting green vehicles and mechanical solutions were presented at the Green Truck Summit which took place during the Work Truck Show 2010 in March. The Work Truck Show Green Award was given to Terex Utilities for their plug-in hybrid electric vehicle system that operates the truck’s aerial lift without the need of running the engine. The huge advantage is that the system can be installed on any chassis; therefore even the drivers of used trucks can benefit and save on fuel.

Few decades ago in the time with a rising fuel prices, the automotive companies were looking for some new paradigms in the developing of a new generation of cars which will be less dependent on fuel and classical energy sources. New concepts were developed like hybrid cars, hydrogen cars and electric cars. The last one was common at the beginning of the last century but quickly forgotten after the First World War, only to be rediscovered in the last decade.

Hybrid cars vas developed as automobiles with a two combined power sources. The first one is a classical internal combustion engine which power the car for the most of the time and the second one is electric which helps the car during the acceleration and drive in the traffic clogged environments like city centers, towns and high traffic lanes around the towns and cities. The electric motor is powered by the electric power from the batteries situated in the car. The electric motors also use the electric energy which is created when the driver hits the brakes and vehicle is decelerating. This concept shows a success and in the last decade the car enthusiasts and eco friendly new car owners can buy cars like Toyota Prius and Honda Insight.

The hydrogen concepts show bigger problems but few big automotive companies continue to develop hydrogen cars, hydrogen fuel cells and the concepts of the new Hydrogen Economy. One of the biggest problems for the new hydrogen cars is the nonexistence of any infrastructure for hydrogen refueling. Recently there are some efforts for building hydrogen producing plants, but also a hydrogen refueling network.

Recently a new line of VW cars called Bluemotion with an advanced diesel motor literally kill the all reasons to buy a hybrid. The VW Polo Bluemotion is burning less fuel and has less CO2 emissions than any hybrid on the market today. Another reason to buy a Bluemotion car from VW is lower price tag and lower cost of ownership.

Electric vehicles from Tesla and Toyota joint venture

Last week, Tesla Motors, Inc. (Tesla) and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) announced an intention to cooperate in the further development of electric vehicles, parts, and production system, but also in engineering support. Toyota Motor Corporation will purchase $50 million of Tesla’s common stock which will provide Toyota significant presence in the Tesla Motors.

Toyota and Tesla Motors have agreed to work together after the decision of famous American Company (Tesla Motors) which produces mainly electric cars dedicated itself to the Toyota manufacturing approach called Monozukuri. Toyota proved as a behemoth with slow moves in the speedy world environment and the Tesla acquiring will promote better and quicker business decisions.

Both companies are happy about this buy out. Toyota is going to get a greater beached on the American soil and Tesla will have access to the huge Toyota business finance and technological resources. In this moment Tesla Inc. is the only company which is producing serial highway capable electric cars. The Tesla roadster is an electric car with a sporty spirit with which many owners of the internal combustible engine sports cars are afraid to compare.
