New Vehicles in the Mini Family

The Mini team has been working on a smaller version of the MINI for some time now. Rumor has it, that the concept should be ready for the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in March. Not much information has been revealed yet, but it will probably be a two-seater based on a modified version of an existing front-engine/front-wheel-drive platform with a shorter wheelbase and small-capacity gasoline engine. It would make it a direct competition to Smart ForTwo. Another possibility is that the car will have three seats. It is also expected that it will be a development of an existing concept that first appeared in Geneva in 1997 – a 4-seater known as the MINI Spiritual.

The plans for new smaller MINI are part of BMW’s Project “i” – aiming to develop cars for the future. The first vehicle in the program is the MINI E – an all-electric version of Mini. The car is not yet widely offered, but the field tests are in progress. For example, Mini E is available through leasing to private users in California and the New York area as well as in the UK. The Mini E is powered by a lithium-ion battery pack weighting 572 pounds (259 kg) that is placed instead of a back seat. The car range is said to be 156 miles (251 km) on a single charge under optimal conditions, but when it comes to standard driving conditions, the MINI can offer a range of 109 miles (175 km) in the city and 96 miles (154 km) on highway. The top speed is 95 mph (153 km/h). What is interesting, when the battery levels drop to 20%, the system automatically slows power delivery and shuts down the air-conditioning etc, to help the driver get home.

The BMW engineers also tests a race car version of MINI E. Its electric motor is identical to the one used in the standard MINI E, but the body of the car is 225kg lighter, mainly thanks to carbon-fibre panels. The vehicle is in a concept stage and it is not yet sure if it will go for sale.

The 2011 Geneva Motor Show will also host two other new releases: the 2012 Coupe and Roadster models – sportier-looking, lightener, two-seat variations of the MINI. Later this year MINI will release its Countryman model – a crossover SUV that was first shown also in Geneva, in March. It is the largest car produced under this brand.

Is the New MINI Mini Redundant?

And I don’t just mean the name. The new MINI Minor (affectionately dubbed the MINI Mini) is set to be revealed as a concept car at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show, and to the untrained eye, photos of the Spiritual, an early prototype, look an awful lot like the Smart ForTwo and Toyota iQ cars recently seen buzzing in and out of freeway traffic and taking up half a parking spot. They share the same squished-nose, bubble-car look and sport two doors, a hatchback, and slightly bulging windows (and this is cute…they only require one windshield wiper). So what is so special about the latest offering from Mini and how is it going to edge in on Smart’s toehold on the mini-car market?

For starters, the MINI Minor is made by BMW (prototypes are being assembled at a factory in Munich, Germany as we speak). You may recall the Morris Mini Minor Austin of the 1950s, which looked something like the MINI Coopers of today. And while the Minor of tomorrow shares a few features, the look is altogether more sleek and modern (more round than boxy). Yes, this is a different beast from your Grandpa’s Mini and it may just give Smart cars a run for their money. While the appearance is certainly similar, the MINI may have several features that Smart and Toyota just can’t compete with.

At this point, most of the production details are sketchy, but let’s give in to a bit of reasoned speculation. BMW has been working on a 3-cylinder engine concept that they originally intended for the Megacity car, a 4-seater with a carbon-fiber body set to release in 2013 (although it is now being touted as an electric car). This could significantly reduce production costs (a savings that would be passed on to consumers). They also reportedly scrapped plans to make the Minor a 4-seat vehicle since it would be too difficult to match the size specifications with legal safety requirements in both Europe and the United States. A 3-seat configuration like that of Toyota’s iQ is possible, but unlikely at this point. It seems that the whole idea, in keeping with MINI’s long-standing tradition, is to create a front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicle that utilizes very little space for the engine while reserving the majority of available space for passengers. Also interesting is the fact that MINI apparently plans to eschew a carbon-fiber body in favor of conventional technology, possibly for safety reasons.

Although the whole venture is still up in the air, with future production plans hazy, the ultra-compact car does seem like a good fit for the company. Rumors circulate that the major holdup at this point is lowering production costs to the point that making a profit is viable, but with the industrious team at BMW helming the project, there’s sure to be a resolution before the Geneva Auto Show next March. And with a name like MINI attached to the truly tiny vehicle, brand recognition might be enough to vault them past the competition.

Not so long time ago, when I was big fan of submarines I learned the fact that the best conventional propulsion for this submersibles is the diesel electric engines/motors. Now the Germans are going to try to dominate the world again and guess what? They are going to use the same proven recipe like 70 years ago – the diesel electric propulsion. Before you start to ask what a hack is going on this blog, let me to tell you that this is going to be an article for the new BMW concept of diesel electric hybrid.

BMW new diesel electric hybrids have astonishing look and performances. The power of the engines is 356 hp. From 0 to 60 mph the new BMW hybrid can reach in 4.8 seconds. Fuel consumption is just 63 mpg.

The design of the car is great. No one can tell that this car is made with a nature or sustainability in mind. The car looks and feel like it belongs to the race track and it is going to be a real magnet for girls. Usually the customers who care about the nature do not get this kind of attention, but the owner of this exceptional car is going to get this as the additional value. Of course this is not coming cheap. Although the price for this new concept is not revealed, there are some outside guesses that the car is coming in the low 6 figures. According to BMW goal to produce only 10.000 units per year and using some info about the BMW ActiveHybrid7 we have figured out that the new Sporty BMW hybrid will cost over 100.000 US dollars.

A few months ago Hyundai revealed the similar concept with Hyundai i-flow diesel electric hybrid which will burn only 3 liters of diesel for every 100 km. This rise a question: Is BMW following the Hyundai tweeter account or they just have the similar ideas?

The new BMW diesel electric is going to enter production by end of 2012 and the first units are going to be sent to the clients in the first half of 2013. Until then we are going to buy another piggy bank so we can save enough money for it because we like this hot sexy car a lot.

New BMW Gran Coupe Concept at Beijing Motor Show

Concept Gran Coupe is the code name of the new BMW which has been shown on the Beijing Motor Show. This car is a four door coupe and it is going to be a rival of Volkswagen Passat CC, Mercedes CLS and Ford Mondeo.

BMW did not reveal more information about this car. It is unknown when and where is going to be manufactured, which and how many engines will be offered or is this concept going to share the same platform with other BMW cars.

BMW Gran Coupe Concept is very attractive and beautiful car and if it is offered on the international car market in the upper segment it is going to be a rival which need to be counted on.

Audi tops Mercedes in worldwide premium car sales, now after BMW

For the first time in history of car sales, Audi AG has reported that their sales number worldwide for the first quarter of 2010 has exceeded those of Mercedes Benz. Mercedes has sold 248 500 new vehicles, while Audi scored very well on the market and sold as much as 264 100 new vehicles, which is 25.9 % increase in sales from the last year sales in the same period (Q1 2009).

The first quarter of 2010 has been a record breaking for the Audi. Audi is clear with its plans and where it is heading now. Speaking with numbers, their goal is 1.5 millions of units per year, and winning the title “best selling premium luxury brand in the world” by 2015.

On a global level, in the category of premium brands for the year of 2009, Audi AG held the 3rd place behind BMW at 1st and Mercedes Benz at 2nd place. However BMW has not yet released complete sales results for the Q1, 2010, and there is a possibility for Audi to even take 1st place for the first three months of 2009.
According to all the analysis, increase in Audi sales happened partly due to their domination in the Chinese market, where more than 51 449 sales has been recorded in the first quarter this year. Mercedes Benz sold just 24 100 and BMW AG sold 34 179 vehicles in that same Chinese market.

In 1975, BMW in United States was just another name amongst many European Car Manufactures. The BMW brand was not very strong and only the real car enthusiasts were familiar with a quality of this German car brand.

In order to strengthen the BMW brand the managers of the BMW North American headquarters come with idea to hire Alexander Calder to repaint the BMW 3.0 racing car. The decision was a full success and also starts a tradition for a BMW and well established American artists and graphic designers. After Alexander Calder, Frank Stella was invited to bring life to the next racing car. In the next decade many artists give their unique vision for the BMW racing cars and among them there were many famous names like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and Robert Rauschenberg.

BMW not only get the much needed promotion but some of the models become a symbol of the Pop Art revolution in United States and abroad.
The artists were sketching the paint schemes on the model and then BMW was painting the car. This was not the case with Andy Warhol. Using his own brushes Andy Warhol painted his own M1 BMW racing car by himself.

The new BMW M3 GT2 race car is seventeenth car which will have unique colours by Artist Jeff Koons. The new BMW M3 GT2 race car is expected to be completed in the first week of June.
Koon’s project, a BMW M3 GT2 race car, will compete in the 24 hours endurance Le Mans race in France.

BMW Ordered 240 000 Diesel Engines for American Police

BMW Group is proud and announcing that that they have received a major order from Carbon Motors Corp. to build and ship more than 240,000 diesel engines. Carbon Motor Corp. is the only car-maker in the world established with the sole purpose for producing cars for Law Enforcement Agencies. The cars are destined for the home (US) market.

Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG was more than proud to speak about this huge deal for BMW. He and William Santana Li, Chairman and CEO of Carbon Motors Corp. signed the contract at a ceremony that took place in Washington D.C. few days ago. The specifications are as follows: BMW will produce and deliver more than 240,000 inline 6-cilinder diesel engines, together with complete cooling and exhaust gas systems. The package will be completed with Automatic Transmission System that is so common for US market.

This is one more confirmation and recognition of the BMW leadership in technology development. BMW Group head people must be very satisfied; they have bitten the German competition once again.

For Carbon Motors Corp. this is very big opportunity to produce cars based on proven and latest technology, while having a stable partner with huge experience in car producing business. US Law Enforcement Vehicles will now be more efficient, lowering the fuel consumption for about 40 percent while delivering sporty performance and agility, all combined with much greener emissions.

American Taxpayers will be please to know that the USA is optimizing and cutting costs and always thinking ahead.

The New 2011 BMW X5

The New BMW X5 has always been the sportiest car in this segment of luxury SUV vehicles. It looks very powerful and sexy, yet elegant with the balanced figure. You can judge this baby from every angle, and yet it is still a perfect BMW. On stage it carries the best lap times and loves the bendy B-roads. Of course it is perfect companion for a luxury comfortable cruising on a highway.

The new 2011 BMW X5 is much more refined and but most of the changes are under the hood. Subtle changes are also present in the interior, and all the variants are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard for an increased driving comfort. All engines are refined, with small design modifications and optimizations. Power is increased but all engines burn about 10% less fuel compared to their predecessors. They all use all-aluminium design which helps to maintain perfect 50:50 weight ratio on both axles.

Powerful Xenon Light are a perfect match with LED are used as a day lights and looks to good, especially at dusk. More minor changes are apparent only to trained eye, assuring that owners of the previous version will not be left with a vehicle that got older overnight.

Interior uses some more precious electronics and the latest generation of I-Drive system, combined with an advanced navigation system and luxury sound system. Leather seats can be moved electronically in 8 directions, capable of heating and cooling depending on the temperature inside.
