Racecar Enthusiasts: How to Have a Racecar Look-Alike

Racecar Enthusiasts: How to Have a Racecar Look-Alike

Forget baseball, NASCAR is the new American pastime. NASCAR has quickly become America’s favorite spectator sport and the races are viewed in an additional 150 countries worldwide. The sport began on the back roads of North Carolina and Florida during the Prohibition, and has quickly turned into a franchise that nets billions in revenue each year. If you are a diehard NASCAR fan and want to turn your vehicle into a race-ready stock car, there are several points to consider.

Before You Modify

Before you visit your local auto parts store, construct a realistic budget. The average NASCAR team spends at least $20 million maintaining a fleet of 14-20 cars. Your budget will probably be much more modest and must be kept in mind when it comes time to choose realistic car parts and modifications. Don’t be surprised if your mid-level stock car modifications cost upwards of $10,000 and this figure doesn’t include the price of a car.

Now, it’s time to choose a car to modify, if you don’t already have one sitting in the garage. Keep in mind the vehicle’s base price, the price and availability of aftermarket parts and your comfort level. Generally, the Honda Civic and Accord, Nissan Skyline, Toyota Supra and Mitsubishi Eclipse fit the bill. The 1980-2003 Ford Mustang or BMW 3-Series are also excellent choices if you’re looking for a different flair. Continue reading

How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance

Car insurance is a very expensive outgoing for most drivers. In many cases it can be as expensive as the car, because certain categories of people are considered high risk, regardless of how competent or safe a driver they are. Age and gender have an unavoidable effect on your car insurance premiums: Young males are more likely to have an accident than older women, so their insurance is more expensive, naturally. There are, however, tricks you can use to reduce the cost of your insurance.

Cheaper Car Insurance

Shop Around

No matter how ‘high risk’ you are, there are ways to reduce the premium that you have to pay. Looking at comparisons between policy offerings will give you a good idea of how you can save money to start with. There are huge discrepancies between companies, in terms of the cost of insurance in different areas and for different people. Shopping around is one of the best ways to save on your insurance.

The Right Job Title

Sadly, there is a huge amount of discrimination in the area of auto insurance. Many insurers will jump to conclusions about you based upon your occupation. These assumptions tend to include anything which is stereotypically true of an occupation. For example, journalists are considered higher risk because it is thought that they use cars in high-pressure situations and are more likely to be carrying an important passenger. None of these assumptions are necessarily true, and yet the insurance premiums for journalists are higher than average. Other groups that experience higher premiums are students, builders, and delivery people. The best way to avoid these rises in cost is to experiment with your job title. For example, a ‘journalist’ is also a ‘writer’ and this simple change can chop hundreds of dollars off your car insurance quote. Last year, for example, I could have been considered a student, a manager, or a trustee in terms of occupation. All of these titles remained true but the variation of insurance costs between student and trustee was over $500 without anything else being changed. This saving made a huge impact – just make sure that the information on your form is true. Builders can try ‘brick-layer’ or ‘plasterer’ to see similar reductions.

What Type of Gas is Right For My Car?

If you have been an automobile owner for any length of time, you have most likely stood at the pump and wondered what kind of gas to put in your car. What type of gas is right for your car? Does it matter if I skimp a little when times are tight and put a lower octane level in my tank? Or do I buy myself more time in between seeing the mechanic if I spring for the more expensive gas? If you are like most of us that are watching the steadily rising gas prices, you might determine that the gas that is right for you is whatever you can afford to put in your car! But, by doing a little bit of research, you can find out which gas is actually the best long-term value for your car to help it run well for years to come.

What are the different types of gas?

The first thing you should do to figure out what kind of gas is right for your car is to check the manual. The makers of your car have done a lot of work to figure out what makes your car run at its best.  There are alternative gases like LPG, diesel, bio-diesel and ethanol blends, but most people already know if their car needs one of those special fuels, so let’s move on to the more standard choices offered by most gas stations. The most common kind of gas is unleaded. It is also the least expensive and many cars run their whole lives quite comfortably on it. There are also cars that use super unleaded and premium grades of gas, depending on the engine. As a general rule, high performance engines tend to require higher grade gasoline as indicated by the octane rating. Navigating the Car Rental Insurance Maze

When you hire any type of vehicle, the company that hires it to you expects to get it back in the same condition that it left the yard in. If that vehicle is damaged, whether it’s your fault or another driver’s, then the car rental company is going to look to you to pay for the damages. Basic insurance is included in the hiring of all vehicles, whether it’s a cheap car hire business, or a major corporation.

As the hirer, you will be expected to meet any form of excess, and this is usually quite high unless you opt for an enhanced insurance package which adds more to the cost of hiring the vehicle. It’s also worth checking if your regular car insurance policy covers you when driving a hire car.

The basics

When you hire a car there is almost always some form of insurance included in the initial cost of renting the vehicle. What many people fail to realise is that it comes with a high excess – usually in the thousands of dollars – which the hirer will be required to pay in the event of any damage. Sometimes an enhanced insurance policy is already factored into the initial quote though, making the hiring of the car more expensive. It pays to read the fine print before committing, because this extra insurance can be declined, resulting in a cheaper price for the car.

Extra insurance

What many car hire companies offer you when picking up the vehicle is an enhanced insurance policy that in essence reduces the excess you have to pay in the event of any claims. There are often different levels of insurance as well that will affect the excess and overall cost of hiring the car, along with the situations it covers you in. Obviously if you waive any of this extra insurance then the cost of hiring the car is going to be cheaper. But if you damage the car then you can be left with a big hole in your wallet. Another insurance you may come across is personal insurance, which covers any items stolen from the vehicle. Continue reading
