Justin Bieber Gets $100K Fisker Karma for a Birthday Present

As gas prices continue to rise, more and more Americans are turning to alternative fuel-powered vehicles to get them from point A to point B. And although it seems these days that every other car on the road is a Prius, the low-key sedan is clearly not an appealing choice for all. Apparently, even a teenager can expect a great deal more. Well, as long as he happens to be the most famous teenager in the world. Music sensation Justin Bieber recently celebrated his eighteenth birthday, and his manager surprised him with the gift of an electric car. But you guessed it, this was no Kia or Hyundai. It was a $100,000 Fisker Karma.

Scott Braun, Bieber’s manager, presented the world famous Canadian pop star with his birthday present live on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show”. Apparently, Justin Bieber is a huge car aficionado, but Braun wanted to make sure that whatever fantastic automobile Bieber is cruising around in, he’s promoting the message of environmental friendliness first and foremost. Well that, alongside maintaining his reputation in a state-of-the-art sports car.

Braun revealed the car to Bieber from behind a curtain, as if they were contestants on the old “The Price is Right” game show. Bieber appeared shocked at the present, wearing a similar face as his throngs of tween fans sport waiting to steal a glimpse of him outside a concert. But the Fisker Karma is a truly remarkable vehicle. First off, it only just made it to showrooms at the end of last year. And Bieber probably knew all too well the sticker price – reportedly between $95,000 and $108,000. Of course there’s a slew of tax incentives when you buy a fully-electric vehicle. But I’m guessing people don’t pony up for the Fisker Karma because of tax rebates.

The company behind Fisker Karma is certainly touting its benefits, and if what they say is true, it is quite possible that we’ll see more high-profile celebrities settling in behind their wheels. Fisker, the Anaheim, CA-based corporation that makes the car, is declaring it the first luxury electric vehicle that also promises extended range. The Fisker Karma gets its power from a 180 kW lithium-ion battery, which is fully rechargeable. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. The massive battery weighs in at a whopping 605 pounds.

Although the Fisker Karma can run on electric alone, it’s probably more accurate to call it a hybrid. The car will get between 30 and 50 miles on electricity, but it also comes equipped with a four-cylinder gas engine. Fueled up you can expect an additional 250 miles of range.

And there’s no shortage of nifty amenities. The Fisker Karma comes equipped with a rooftop solar panel, which helps recharge the battery. Though it’s not significant in general, if you keep the car in a generally-sunny climate, you could tack on approximately 200,000 additional miles of range each year. It sounds like a fantastic vehicle, and Bieber’s manager is making a nice statement by having his client go green. But don’t expect to see the Fisker Karma at a car hire USA location in the near future, unless it happens to be frequented by another fabulously wealthy teen idol.
