10 Important Road Trip Essentials

If you’re planning a long driving trip this year, there are a lot of things you need to remember before you set foot to pedal. Accommodation, mechanical check ups, and car insurance are just some of them. However, if you’re organising your own motor or car hire, Sydney siders need to remember some important things.

Here are ten things people regularly forget:

Spare Tyre
You definitely don’t want to be caught standing by the road without one of these. Check yours is fully inflated and has no punctures and if you ever need to use it, replace it straight away!

Jack & Tyre Iron
Your tyre is useless without these. Don’t just make sure you’ve got them. Make sure you know how to use them.

Road trip essentials

Maps
No matter where you think you’re going, it’s always a good idea to have maps of the way there and the surrounding area. Even of you’ve been there before, there’s always the possibility of detour or a change in conditions. Prepare yourself for the possibilities by picking up a cheap local directory or travel map and plotting out various routes and trips.

Oil
An easy one to forget. Always check your oil and check that you have at least one spare bottle packed away. Your car will thank you for it by getting better fuel consumption and living a longer working life. Don’t be tempted to skimp on the brand.

Water
There are two types of water, for yourself and for your car. We suggest taking a ready supply of both. For longer drives, a litre a day should cover it.

Music
Long drive? It always pays to have some entertainment when you’re on a long trip. At the very least, if you have kids, it’ll stop them singing that song they have over and over again. If you have an mp3 dock, prepare yourself some playlists, otherwise, burn something to disc. On a really long drive, try some radio plays or books read aloud by your favourite stars to turn your travel into an adventure.

Sunglasses and hat
The sun visor over your dash board will only do so much. There is far more glare than you realise that makes it into your car. For your immediate safety and the long term health of your eyes, reduce the damage of the solar rays by donning sunglasses and a hat.

Sun Screen
The sun’s damage won’t end there. Not many people consider that the UV rays in Australia constantly attack your skin while you’re driving. Most at risk are your face and your right arm as it sits by the driver side window.

Tissues
Spills happen easily when you’re eating and driving and there’s nothing worse than trying to drive with a running nose. On the other hand, a desperate need to stop and use a tissue is a guaranteed way to get every green light!

Air Freshener
If you’re going to be sitting in your car for hours on end, consider the state of the recycled air and grab a little pine tree for your mirror.

And there you have it. If you take all of the above into consideration you’re sure to have a wonderful trip and be prepared for just about anything on your journey!
