When Honda comes along with a new version of the car to which the company owes its fortune and heritage, you have to take notice.

And the new Honda Civic Hatchback certainly does the marque proud – both in sporty looks and performance – both at an affordable price. This has always been the Civic’s hallmark and main selling proposition.

Anyone looking for sporty looks and performance that is simultaneously affordable and practical should look no further.

The new Civic has excellent boot space and clever rear folding seats which make it a really practical family saloon – a reality which belies its sleek sporty look.

Three engine options are currently available. There are 1.4 and 1.8-litre petrol engines, and a 2.2-litre diesel version. A 1.6-litre diesel engine version will join the Civic line-up late in 2012. No hybrids are available as yet.

The Civic is very competitively priced and looks likely to hold its second hand value very well – as do all Hondas.

Mileage per gallon figures are good for its class as are CO2 emissions which you’d expect from a manufacturer that really pioneered low emission cars.

The upper part of the dashboard is soft to the touch, and the overall feel is of a quality vehicle which is built to last – both inside and out.

Like all Hondas, the new Civic Hatchback pays great deal of attention to safety features. Every Civic includes stability control, six air-bags and active anti-whiplash front head restraints. There are also energy absorbing front wing mounts and windscreen wiper pivots which are designed to break away on impact.

Meanwhile, for the security conscious buyers, there are deadlocks and an alarm as standard.
