California Lemon Law and High End Vehicles

California Lemon Law and High End Vehicles

Written by Donald Ladew from Norman Taylor & Associates

It seems logical that if you dole out $150,000 for a new high-end rare sports car, you’ve done all you need to do except get the keys. You shouldn’t have to do anything else except have the oil changed now and then and enjoy the wind blowing in your hair.

Well, fine. That was the fantasy. Regrettably we must now move on to reality. Percentage wise high end vehicles make about the same number of lemon cars as Mercedes, BMW, or Cadillac.
Here at Norman Taylor & Associates we barely got through January before we had cases with Bentley, Lamborghini, Porsche and Maserati, and we continued to have these vehicles as lemons for the rest of the year.

What about defects?
Were the defects different? Were they exotic or maybe they were caused by those funny little guys from Area 51. Sorry if I disappoint. The answer is no to all of the above. The defects found in these cars were the same as those found in a Ford Focus or any other modern car.

Here‘s an anecdotal example of an actual case with a very high-end vehicle. Some years ago a gentleman, who later became a client, bought a Bentley Arnage for himself and another for his wife. The combined cost of the two vehicles was over a half million dollars. Both vehicles had the same problem. It wasn’t a unique lemon law defect at all. The engines ran rough. Numerous updated revisions of the engine control software were attempted without success. The EGR control valves were replaced and on and on. Finally we were asked to help and we were able to get both vehicles repurchased thanks to the California lemon law.

Except that both vehicles were very fine looking, inside and out, they were just like any other vehicle as far as defects were concerned. High-end, low-end, good ones are made and so are bad. Like you, I wish I knew which were which before I paid out $25,000 or $250,000.
