The Latest Stolen Cars Report

Although most car companies have revamped design ideas for their newer cars, transitioning from opulent to ergonomic, eco-friendly exteriors, auto thieves still remain on the prowl for the “blinged-out” cars of yesteryear.  The annual car theft report printed by USA Today collects three years of theft data, covering car models from 2007 to 2009, and determines theft rankings through theft claims paid out for every thousand vehicles insured; the resulting figures are calculated based on theft rates for each model and the average amount of insurance paid out for each theft.

According to the report, the Cadillac Escalade, a lofty, gas guzzling, luxury sports utility vehicle tops the list for average insurance theft losses.  Buttressing the Escalade as the second car most frequently stolen is the Ford F-250 crew cab pickup with four-wheel drive, the working man’s mule; and tied for the third most frequently car stolen are the Infiniti G37 2-door and Dodge Charger HEMI.  While the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has a much lower theft frequency, the sexy, zippy sports car falls in behind the Charger and Infiniti because of its extremely high average payout of $41,229.

Topping off the list of the ten cars most frequently stolen and paid out are the Hummer H2 4WD, Nissan Armada, Chevrolet Avalanche 1500, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Crew, and the GMC Yukon.

These ten cars have a higher rate of theft, higher average pay outs, and higher average losses than any other 2007 to 2009 model vehicle.  Kim Hazelbaker, the insurance industry’s Highway Loss Data Institute Senior Vice President, claims that “thieves are after chrome, horsepower, and Hemis,” undoubtedly the reason why these top ten cars head the list of cars most often stolen.  Not to mention, most of the trucks listed are also usually loaded with work tools or other valuables that make them a prime target for thieves.

However, closing out the list of cars least stolen are the suburban cruisers and hybrids such as: the Volvo S80, Toyota Prius, Mini Cooper, Subaru Impreza, Saturn Vue, Saturn Vue 4WD, and Nissan Murano.

Makers of these cars claim them to be better protected through more advanced systems like ignition immobilizers and key fobs.  However, vehicles like the Escalade are also geared up with the same anti-theft protection systems.  These suburban cruisers and hybrids just aren’t supped up enough to land on the hot list, and  cars like the Escalade seem just too hot a ticket item to fully protect and prevent from falling prey to professional theft techniques as extreme as hauling it away with a tow-truck.
