Land Rover Announces Updated 2011 Freelander 2

Land Rover’s upgraded models of the Freelander 2 will be available for purchase in the UK markets near the end of September 2010.  The new models have been updated and fitted with a 2.2-liter diesel engine which lend the Freelander 2 improved efficiency and a stronger performance.

The turbo engine will be available in two different designs of the Freelander: the four-wheel drive, TD4 150PS model – which includes stop/start technology for both its manual transmission model and its automatic transmission model, although at an extra cost – and the SD4 190PS model, which is only offered with an automatic transmission.  Both engine models produce twenty Newton meters of torque and will meet tougher EU5 emissions regulations as opposed to the EU4 standards of the models predecessors.

Carbon dioxide emissions for both models have been dramatically cut to 165 g/km for the TD4, which is an eight percent improvement, and 185 g/km for the SD4, a fourteen percent improvement.  And in both cases, the dramatic emission reduction in no way manages to impede the performance levels or efficient and quiet engine response of the new Freelander 2.  The SD4 is able to accelerate from zero to sixty in 8.7 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 118 mph.  Both models are made with catalyzed diesel particulate filters which allow them to now be compatible with ten percent biodiesel as opposed to the older models’ compatibility of five percent.

Not only have the insides of the new Freelander 2 received an overhaul, but both models of the Freelander 2 have also received a much needed facelift.  The new front face of the car incorporates a bumper with new fog lap bezels, a new finish on the grille, and updated headlights and tail lamps.  The wheels are eightteen or nineteen inch alloy, and three color options are available for the body of the car – green, blue, and white.  Inside the body of the new Freelander 2, the instrument dials are redesigned and there are now four new seat options.

Also, available in the UK beginning 2011, Land Rover will be realeasing a derivative model of the Freelander 2 with the option of two wheel drive, the Freelander 2 eD4.  Upon its release into the UK market, this model will have been the most efficient Land Rover designed and sold to date, with a fuel consumption of 47.2mg and carbon dioxide emissions of only 158g/km. Like it’s predecessors, the Freelander 2 eD4 will be powered by the same 2.2-liter turbo diesel engine, which allows it to deliver the same 150PS.  Unlike the Freelander 2, however, this two-wheel drive model will only be fitted with and available in a six-speed manual transmission which will also feature the intelligence of the stop/start technology.

The price for the 2011 Freelander 2 TD4 and SD4 will range from 21,695 to 32,995 GBP, which equates to about 34, 475 to 52,429 US dollars.  The price of the Freelander 2 eD4 will be announced later, as it won’t even hit the UK market until the beginning of January 2011.
