Pininfarina and Bollore executives are perfect example of the people who are doing their homework. In this case the homework was done four to five years ago and it consisted of reading some statistics and future projection of the usage cars in Europe (and we can freely say USA too) What statistics are saying for the future usage of the cars in Europe? Most of the time, the cars today and in the future will be used for not more than 60 km (40 miles) per day. Most of the cars will be used in the clogged towns and city high polluted environments. Cars will be used for going from home to work and vice versa, shopping, taking kids to and from the school and similar short to medium distances. This is nothing what we did not know, but Pininfarina and Bolloré decided to do something about and bring a revolutionary concept which will make the life in these environments better and healthier.

At the beginning of 2008, the famous automaker Pininfarina and Bolloré – world’s leading producer of ultra-thin extruded films used in the production of capacitors, set up a joint venture with 50/50 stake for the both companies. The purpose of this effort was research, designing, developing, manufacturing and distributing of the new breed of electrical car with advanced and revolutionary technical qualities.

The project, for the first time was shown on the Paris Motor Show in October 2009 under the name Pininfarina BLUECAR.
BLUECAR is the all electric MPV. Pininfarina took care for the car and Bollore for the power unit. The car is all electric and for the propulsion use only an electric power stored in the advanced batteries provided by the Bollore which is a world leader in this technology. The car can be recharged from the wall socket in home, but also have few other advanced recharging options.

BLUECAR has elegant lines, outstanding design and comfortable interior. It has automatic transmission, four seats and five doors. Part of the roof is covered with high performance solar cells which are providing a power for some of the BLUECAR features and systems. The information system is build around the big touch screen which provides many important information and system data like battery charge, range/autonomy and speed. With an intuitive and elegant graphic on this screen the user can select the control functions which are required at the moment like: entertainment audio center, GPS, climate control, phone, call for assistance, drive management mode and many more. With easy to use remote control, driver can send a command to the car for a start, cooling or heating.

The most interesting and advanced part of the car is an electric propulsion and the electric power storage. BLUECAR is fitted with Lythium Metal Polymere batteries known as LMP which is combined with energy storage (supercapacity device), which is retrieving and storing energy which is released when breaks are applied. This provides greater acceleration, greater autonomy of the BLUECAR, and longer lifespan of the batteries. Range of the BLUECAR is 250 km when is fully recharged. LMP battery can store five times more electricity by weight unit compared to other electricity storing technologies which are available on the market. The LMP batteries can be recharged only for 2-3 hours. The life span of the LMP is 200.000 km. LMP are dry batteries which increase the safety features. The whole battery pack is installed below the floor of the BLUECAR which lower the car’s center of gravity which make this car more stabile and increase the road holding.

The all electric cars are cars with ZERO emissions of CO2. The hybrids are only electric assisted cars which main propulsion unit is internal combustion engine and have some CO2 emissions and pollution. It is important this two concepts to be clearly divided.
