New “Urban Mobility” Concept From GM Unveiled

As the figures show, increasing number of people lives in the cities and works in their centers. In 2030 60% of 8 billion people will live in urban areas. As a result, even the most developed network of highways and parking lots, and well-functioning railway and subway will not be enough for the increasing number of commuters.

That is why a new intelligent individual transport is indispensable. For some the subject may seem a science fiction, but the researches are undertaken in several countries and the first results can be seen soon.

Between May 1st and October 31st at Shanghai World Expo 2010, General Motors, along with its strategic partner in China – Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. Group (SAIC) – will be presenting their vision of personal mobility in the cities. Their concept vehicle, called EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle), looks like a small electric capsule. The place of the debut is not accidental as Shanghai with 20 million inhabitants is one of the most populated cities on earth.

As the representatives of GM and SAIC say, the EN-V can help to eliminate the problem of motor vehicles from the debate on environmental protection. EN-V is a two-seater electric car, designed to alleviate the problems associated with congestion, parking, and air quality in the cities of the future.

The whole body of the vehicle built of acrylic and carbon fibers, so that weight does not exceed 500kg. For the time being the capsule has a range of 40km (25 miles). Thanks to combination of GPS-based navigation with wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communication and distance-sensing technologies, the vehicle could be driven both manually and autonomously. Another advantage of these high-tech solutions is the possibility to reduce the number of accidents on the roads, as the vehicle will ‘sense’ what is going on around – for example it will be able to quickly react if a pedestrian steps out or any obstacle occurs. What is important, the EN-V will also automatically select the fastest route based on real-time traffic information. Furthermore, its small size means that the same parking space can be big enough for five times as many EN-Vs as typical automobiles.
